India has recognized the growing importance of data privacy and cybersecurity in the digital era, particularly as online transactions and data exchanges continue to surge. India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDP Act) establishes clear rules for data collection, processing, and transfer, emphasizing consent-based data processing and granting individuals rights to access, correct, and erase their data.
The IT Act, 2000, addresses cybercrimes like hacking and identity theft, while the Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code regulate privacy and content moderation on digital platforms. The National Cyber Security Policy, 2013, and CERT-In guidelines further strengthen India’s cybersecurity efforts.
Despite these advancements, challenges such as awareness gaps, enforcement issues, and evolving cyber threats remain. Stronger legal enforcement, improved compliance, and global alignment are key to enhancing data protection and supporting digital growth in India.
