Bar Council Of India Allowing Tieups With Law Firm

In March 2023, the Bar Council of India (BCI) introduced new rules allowing foreign lawyers and law firms, including those from London, to practice foreign law in India on a reciprocal basis. These foreign entities can offer legal services in non-litigious areas such as mergers, intellectual property, and international arbitration but cannot practice Indian law or appear in Indian courts.

Foreign lawyers and law firms must register with the BCI to operate in India, with a registration fee of $25,000 for individuals and $50,000 for firms. The registration is valid for five years and is subject to renewal, with foreign practitioners allowed to stay for up to 60 days in a 12-month period on a "fly in and fly out" basis.

This development has been well-received internationally, with entities like the Law Society of England and Wales recognizing it as a significant step. It facilitates greater collaboration between Indian and foreign legal professionals, particularly in providing legal advice on foreign and international law in India.
