Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA)

Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA)

The Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA), created in 1995, aims to provide free housing to slum dwellers in Mumbai by redeveloping unsafe slum areas with modern, well-planned buildings. It encourages private developers through incentives like additional Floor Space Index (FSI) and follows a public-private partnership model.

To qualify, residents must have lived in slums before January 1, 2000, and are given free housing of 300-350 sq. ft. during redevelopment. While the SRA has rehabilitated over 2 lakh families, it faces challenges like delays, corruption, and resistance to relocation.

Despite setbacks, successful projects like Dharavi Redevelopment highlight the potential of the SRA. Addressing governance and transparency issues will be key to achieving a slum-free Mumbai.
